Guide to buying the right pillow

How to buy a pillow

We spend almost a third of our lives sleeping, this means that a third of our lives, comfort depends on the investment you make when it comes to your sleeping equipment such as pillows. It is vital to get a pillow that supports your neck and promotes spinal alignment from your neck, through well… the rest of your body.

Having a straight spine will make a huge impact on your quality of sleep, completely eliminate or heavily reduce any neck pain or stiffness that you may experience – we did mention these are a big investment right!

Finding the right pillow is not as difficult as it sounds, let’s have a look at what we should consider and do before we purchase our pillows.

Firstly, what is your sleeping style?

The concept is easy to grasp, we all have a particular way in which we prefer to sleep. This will be the posture that you most often find yourself falling asleep in. There are three types of sleepers, mainly, Side sleepers, stomach sleepers and back sleepers. This has a high effect on the type of pillow that you should purchase for yourself, this is because:

  • Side sleepers – Generally a firmer, medium sized pillow is most suitable for you.
  • Stomach sleepers – If a pillow is needed at all, the recommended is a reasonably soft and flat pillow.
  • Back sleepers – Should be neither too firm nor too soft, with a firmer section on the lower quarter of the pillow to promote support on the neck area, helping with spinal alignment.

Next up, what material do you most prefer?

There can be quite a wide variety of materials to choose from, the good news is that these, generally all have common advantages and disadvantages. There is no absolutely necessary material, it all depends on your preference. To briefly list the various type of general materials:

  • Down / feather pillows – although two different materials, they are highly similar both filled with the feathers from that of duck or geese. These can vary in firmness so it is important to keep in mind your sleeping pattern when purchasing.
  • Wool / cotton pillows – Mostly suitable for side sleepers as they are known to be more firm than soft.
  • Latex – Due to the ability to mold to shape, these are applicable for all three various forms of sleeping, however, these are generally also known to be more expensive.
  • Memory Foam pillow – Best pillows available, coming in various shapes and sizes these provide perfect support for your body while you rest.

Have a look at the cleaning requirements.

If you’re taking the leap and purchasing a rather hefty priced pillow, or any pillow at all. You will want to make it last as long as it can as a high-quality product. A part of this is ensuring that the pillow remains clean. It is strongly recommended that a pillow is washed 3-4 times a year. This means it’s important to take note if you will be willing to wash the pillow in the way that the label allocates. Some may be machine friendly, others may only be dry cleaning friendly and so-on!

Well, now you know the what’s and why’s, is there more?

The below list may seem rudimentary but it’s a few general tips to help you with your purchasing decision for that perfect pillow.

  • Find reviews on pillows that you are considering purchasing, this will help bolster your confidence that the pillow does what it claims to.

  • Test, test, test. It is important to test the pillow before purchasing it. Often you will be able to try it out in store on a mattress. If this isn’t an option you can also try to use it against the wall. Either way, make sure that it is a completely comfortable fit for you!
